Last week we had a small snowstorm so I decided to drive around town and take some pictures while it was snowing. I worked with textures that I purchased from Dirk Wustenhagen and Shadowhouse Creations .
The shot above was actually taken in the business park in my town which has some gorgeous woods within in it. The image below was taken in our town park. I liked the textures in the snow and the highlights it added. When I’m photographing I create the composition first and then look at how the image is lit. I’m really starting to like grey cloudy days because the textures work really well with the lack of color. I can really paint where I want the light, the amount of light and color/hue. It gives me a greater degree of creativity.

These are the woods behind my house. I completely changed how I wanted this image to look last-minute. I had it looking similar to the first image but it wasn’t really working for me. I decided start from scratch and brought the image back in through Lightroom 4 and used several filters from Nik Color Efex Pro 4 to give an eerie blurry effect. I then brought the image into Photoshop CS5 and added one of Dirk Wustenhagen’s textures to add tone and a spattering of light. The image was composed by angling my camera up to catch the canopy of branches. Again I’m working in that snowstorm and dealing with an overall grey light so I have a lot flexibility to paint with light. The image reminds me of a cover for a book about “Don’t go in the woods or something bad will happen.” In actuality the woods behind my house are not scary at all.

Hi Lori! I keep forgetting that Wampus Brook flows all the way down there. One day I’m going to have to follow it as far as I can.
