Playland is located in Rye, New York and is owned and operated by Westchester County Parks.  Playland was designed, constructed and managed by Frank W. Darling who had designed the British Empire Exposition in Wembley England and the Modern Art Exposition in Paris.  He was also the President of the L.A. Scenic Railway Company in Coney Island.  Playland opened its doors in 1928 and is the only Art Deco amusement park in the country.  It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. The amusement park is opened from Mid May to Mid September and the ice skating rink is opened from October to May.   The park is located on the Long Island Sound and adjoins the Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary.   I enjoy walking around the Playland boardwalk during the off-season and taking photographs of this really beautiful area.  The picture above is the building that is referred to as the ice casino.  Up until the beginning of 2002-2003 season the New York Rangers use to practice here.

This is from the boardwalk looking toward the back of the ice casino.

This is taken from the side of the ice casino facing the two towers in the distance under construction.  Between the two towers sits an olympic size pool which is part of the Rye Playland Beach and Pool.

One of the games on the sidewalk. Look at the stuff you can win!  If you look closely, you can see the iron rail of the board walk reflected in the glass and part of me in the Yankee jacket!

  1. Wow – what a cool place that you’ve captured so well! I have never heard of it though would love to visit! It seems to have some Atlantic City vibe to it? Great photos as usual Karen!
