I have a fascination with fire escapes in New York City. I didn’t realize it until I noticed a large number of my street shots consisted of them. I like the way they reflect shadows onto building walls, the interesting things that are set on them, and the shape created when you look at a fire escape from below. I’ve pulled together a few of my favorites to share.

I think SOHO has some of the most beautiful fire escapes and buildings. I saw this one on my way to get my hair cut. I loved the way the fire escape snakes its way down the side of the building and the rays of the sun hitting it just right.

I wanted to try out my new Lensbaby Fisheye Lens so I found this beautiful scrolled fire escape to test it on.

This fire escape caught my eye because of the black iron against the white building. However, upon closer inspection the colorful reflections in the windows and the little details like the wire from the fire escape railing to the window below intrigued me.

I like the abstract created by photographing this fire escape from below and zooming into the platform of the fire escape.

I really like the old architecture in SOHO.  This photo shows the sunlight just touching on this building in the late afternoon creating a soft shadow of the fire escape.

I shot this on the Manhattan High Line and liked the way the fire escape was reflected in the window.

The sharp angles of the stairs along with the black and red colors make a strong visual.

Two of my favorite things to photograph, graffiti and fire escapes.  Taken on the Manhattan High Line.
